Success in replacing hydraulic lifters with electric ones
Gamathjonustan in Iceland did a project with EcoNord to try out an electronic bin lifter on one of their garbage trucks. The results were great, and since 2006, they now only our electronic bin lifters on all their trucks. One of the main benefits experienced by Gamathjonustan is the very low break-down.
The fleet manager of Gamatjonustan HF reflects on the benefits of using EcoNord electric bin lifters for ten years and the importance of environmentally beneficial innovations. Elias Olafsson (right), chairman of Gamathjonustan HF, and fleet manager Arngrimur Sverrisson, explain why it is important that the waste management industry supports environmentally beneficial innovations.
Celebrating the ten-year anniversary of operating EcoNord’s electrical bin lifters, Olafsson states that buying environmental friendly solutions goes hand in hand with Gamatjonustan´s environmental policy of knowing the environmental impact of their operation and reducing all negative impact on their environment. Healthy working environments for the operators, was key for Gamatjonustan when decided to try out this new solution 2006. The quietness of the operation and the reduction of CO2 while operating the electric bin lifter was a benefit that the operators were quick to discover.
Haukur Árselsson, operator of one of EcoNord’s electric bin lifters, found the lifters easy to operate with fewer movements necessary in the operating space, and the smooth movement reduced the impact on the hands when loading the bins. The quietness reduces the stress of operating in traffic and means that operators are less tired when they go home.
Snorri Sigurdsson, workshop manager at Gamatjonustan, finds them easy to maintain as there are few moving parts and no greasy hydraulics. Caring for the equipment you use and cleaning and greasing, is an important process for long lasting equipment. However, the benefit he cherishes most is the low sound volume when working on the lifters and having to start the vehicles engine.
EcoNord’s electric lifters are cost effective with low maintenance cost and the reduction of fuel consumption, all of which are a good things. But reducing negative impact on the environment and the operator’s health are the main benefits according to Sverrisson.
